Update 2/23/15

The Pacific Maritime Assn. and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union announced Friday that the two sides have reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year contract covering workers at all 29 West Coast ports.

"After more than nine months of negotiations, we are pleased to have reached an agreement that is good for workers and for the industry,” said PMA President James McKenna and ILWU President Bob McEllrath in a joint statement. “We are also pleased that our ports can now resume full operations.”

“The congestion, slowdowns and suspensions over the last few months have had a significant economic impact on the entire supply chain and those who rely on the West Coast ports to move their goods and products around the world and throughout the country. The agricultural, manufacturing, retailing and transportation industries have all suffered due to the nine-month long contract negotiations.”

Jon Stangerup, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, said in a Long Beach Post report that officials "look forward to everyone getting back to business as usual starting immediately.

Dear Simply Baby Furniture Customers,

We know you are wondering why your furniture has not shipped and why we are having trouble giving you accurate ship dates. As you may have heard on the news, the situation at west coast ports continues to deteriorate. As a new step in trying to influence the negotiations between the shipping companies and longshoreman’s union, the shipping companies have begun to deploy the tactic of shutting down the ports entirely for days at a time. This started two weekends ago with a two day shut down and again over Presidents weekend with a four day shut down.

In addition to delaying the offloading of cargo from ships waiting at the port, this situation has begun to have ripple effects throughout the entire supply chain. Typically, ships off load their cargo and take on empty containers to return overseas. Since they cannot unload their cargo, they cannot take on the empties which are stacking up at the ports and at warehouses across the country. Since all of these empties are stuck in the US, getting containers in Asia for the goods already manufactured is becoming more difficult. All of this is leading to gridlock and increasing delays along the entire supply chain.

Because our #1 goal is to deliver your furniture as soon as possible, we are doing our best to set reasonable expectations on our delivery dates, give you timely updates on the items you are waiting for, and get your items shipped just as soon as we are able. Although we do expect some delays on backordered furniture, we do want to assure you that we are here to help you furnish your nursery just how you want it. If you find that a particular item is taking too long, let us help you find a great substitute that is in stock. Otherwise the wait should be days and weeks rather than months. We know our vendors and their styles so call us anytime you need our help.

We hope this situation at the ports will end shortly but until that time we will work with the manufacturers to do what we can and keep you informed and get your items to you.

Sincerely,

Bryan & Nicole
